Champion focus: Sean Rice (RSA)

Sean Rice (RSA), born 5 August 1989, is a professional South African paddler who will aim to defend his 2013 ICF Ocean Racing World Championship title in Tahiti when the Men’s Senior Category gets underway on 3rd October. Question: What has changed since 2013? Sean: Winning the world title in 2013 was a massive boost for me. I could never have imagined how one day could make such a positive difference to my paddling career. I worked hard in training and to win gave me the confidence to keep performing at the highest level. I have continued to race around the world as a professional paddler. Our aim is to spread the word and awareness of Surfski through all paddling disciplines. In 2015 we would have visited over 20 different countries while promoting the sport! Question: Do you keep the focus in the ocean racing discipline? Sean: Surfski is my passion and what I love most but I do still try getting into a marathon or sprint kayak when I get the opportunity, as I believe training across disciplines regularly improves overall performance. Question: What have been your canoeing preparation and activity for the past two years? Sean: I have been full steam ahead in preparation for defending my title. Whatever happens I would have worked as hard as I can. Question: Are you competing in Tahiti? What is the main goal for 2015? Sean: Yes I will be defending my title! Question: Do you know the Tahiti course? What are your expectations? Sean: I do not know the course but will be arriving at the venue with time to see the course and practice it well before the race day. Question; Has surfski and ocean racing discipline changed since the 2013 World Championships in your opinion? What were the most significant changes? Sean: The sport continues to grow around the world. It has become more professional and...
