Germany's Harbrecht and South Africa's Bester claim ICF world championship gold

The 2024 ICF Ocean Racing world championships in Madeira crowned Germany's Gordan Harbrecht and South Africa's Kira Bester as new surfski world champions, marking significant career milestones.

Men's Race: Harbrecht's Historic Triumph

Harbrecht's victory, after years of podium finishes, is his career's most significant and a monumental moment for surfski. He finished almost a minute ahead of three-time champion Cory Hill and legend Hank McGregor, securing Europe's first men's world title. Historically, no European had reached the overall podium when Australia and South Africa competed.

Harbrecht's Strategy and Reaction

"It feels absolutely incredible," Harbrecht shared post-race. "I truly desired this. I executed my plan and maintained my effort." He added, "I recognized the conditions favored me. I had a strong intuition this could be my day, and I'm simply overjoyed." His tactic involved pushing hard early: "I knew I could hurt the guys in the initial two kilometers. My goal was to lead and hold that position when the headwind came. It wasn't fun, but I kept pushing." Harbrecht finished in 1:27:31. Australia's Cory Hill took silver (1:28:24), narrowly passing Hank McGregor (1:28:34) who won bronze. South African Matthew Fenn was fourth (1:29:19), also winning the Under 23 title. Reflecting on his previous near-miss, Harbrecht stated, "I was so close last year. I craved that podium and this victory. I am ecstatic to finally win, especially against such a strong field. It's good to show Germany's presence."

Competitors' Perspectives

Cory Hill admired Harbrecht's strength: "Gordan is incredibly powerful. It became a true paddling race, not ideal for me. I now have six medals from seven World Championships; I'm pleased with those stats." Hank McGregor added another medal. The 46-year-old legend described the race as "a tough one. More headwind than downwind. Full credit to Gordon; he earned this win." He concluded, "It came down to a...
