Hangzhou hosts major paddle sports gathering

Over 500 competitors from 30 Chinese provinces converged in Hangzhou for a significant paddle sport competition. Held from June 6 to 7, this event utilized a historic waterway, blending ancient cultural heritage with contemporary athletics. It featured the 2026 "Grand Canal" Canoe Marathon Series (Hangzhou Station) and the second Hangzhou Mass Canoeing Open.

Recognized as a leading mass canoeing initiative in China, the "Grand Canal" Canoe Marathon Series leverages the historical and cultural assets along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Its primary objective is to foster the widespread adoption and growth of canoeing.

The Hangzhou leg featured challenging 10km Canoe Ocean Racing and Stand Up Paddling (SUP) disciplines. These races accommodated both the general open and masters divisions, with participants aged 15 to 65.

This competition drew diverse individuals, from seasoned paddlers to novice community members, providing an excellent venue for skill demonstration and social interaction.

The course was strategically laid out within the central waters of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Hangzhou segment, linking notable sites like the Wulinmen Pier and the Gongchen Bridge. As athletes navigated, they passed under historic bridges and through picturesque canal scenery, appreciating the cultural legacy of this ancient World Cultural Heritage site while engaging in intense competition.
