Hill secures inaugural Eurochallenge victory after demanding journey

Hill's Eurochallenge Triumph and Motivation

Australian surfski champion Cory Hill recently returned from a whirlwind international trip, claiming his inaugural Eurochallenge title in Villajoyosa, Spain. The three-time ICF World Champion humorously admitted jet lag had finally caught up. His motivation for this journey was straightforward: a podcast prompted him to review his career, noting a distinct lack of European victories. This, coupled with a challenging 2022 trip, spurred him to compete before the upcoming World Championships.

Preparation, Race Start, and Men's Victory

Despite triumphing in many prestigious global events, the Eurochallenge remained a missing title. Hill arrived in Spain exceptionally well-prepared after intensive training. He confessed apprehension upon seeing the "scary" weather forecast, predicting minimal wind – conditions he found less favorable. Fortunately, race day presented suitable conditions for 149 elite paddlers. Europe's top competitors, including Gordan Harbrecht (Germany), Walter Bouzan (Spain), Hector Henot (France), Bernardo Pereira (Portugal), and Matthew Fenn (South Africa), quickly established themselves. Yet, just three kilometers in, Hill broke away decisively. He maintained his lead, despite Pereira and Fenn closing, ultimately securing his first Eurochallenge crown (1:27:26). Pereira (1:27:45), Fenn (1:28:16), Harbrecht (1:29:32), and Henot (1:30:27) rounded out the top five.

Women's Race Results

In the women's competition, Spain's Judit Verges Xifra won after a thrilling contest against Great Britain's Rosie Edwards. Neck-and-neck throughout the 22-kilometer course, Xifra (1:41:27) prevailed by just three seconds over Edwards (1:41:30). Chloe Bunnett (1:43:47), Thais Delriuex (1:44:59), and Amaia Osaba Olaberri (1:45:42) completed the top five.

Future Plans and Expedition Lessons

With Eurochallenge behind him, Hill's attention shifts to the Molokai Challenge, aiming for a fourth title....
