Oscar Jones's Newfound Confidence

Oscar Jones, the 2017 Junior World Champion, has been a consistent presence among Australia's top paddlers for several years. Despite his talent, a subtle internal doubt lingered. He felt his progress wasn't rapid enough, often finishing just outside the top five or ten in major competitions. Jones shared with The Paddler that while he acknowledged his youth, he previously entered races with modest expectations. However, a significant shift has occurred: he now genuinely believes he can contend for podium spots.

Inspiration from Peers and Overcoming Idolization

This newfound confidence was partly inspired by peers like Josh Fenn and Uli Hart, who, despite being similar in age, race with remarkable self-assurance. Jones observed their approach and aspired to challenge them at elite events, including the upcoming World Championships. He understood that to compete at that level, he needed to accumulate strong results and cultivate a similar mindset. This transformation in attitude, however, proved to be a challenging journey. The 23-year-old paddler has always held a profound respect for the sport and its leading figures. Reflecting on his past, Jones admits he might have overly idolized his competitors. He cited consistent performers such as Cory Hill, Hank McGregor, and Michael Booth, recalling how he used to view them as almost invincible. As a younger athlete, his own results often fluctuated, making these established champions seem unapproachable. Now, his perspective has shifted dramatically; he approaches each race with the firm intention to compete for victory from the outset.

Recent Breakthroughs and Internal Shift
