Uli Hart reflects on his breakthrough Cape Point Challenge victory

Uli Hart realized a lifelong dream, overcome with emotion as he crossed the finish line of the 50-kilometer Cape Point Challenge. Just 100 meters from the end, the magnitude of his impending victory brought him to tears, a moment of immense relief and surprise given his young age. This win held deep personal meaning for the Cape Town native, a favorite event of his coach Peter Cole and friends like past champion Kenny Rice. Due to strong south-easterly winds, the 30th-anniversary event was rerouted to False Bay for safety. The starting line featured a formidable array of talent, including eight-time champion Hank McGregor. Hart, the Under 23 world champion, initially planned a cautious race after a demanding season. However, he found himself comfortable with the pace. At Miller's, he took the lead, pushing hard. He and Hank McGregor exchanged leads, but Hart increased his pace in Buffels Bay, eventually pulling ahead of McGregor and Simon van Gysen. He rounded the buoy in first place and never looked back, maintaining his lead for the remaining half of the course, focused on enduring the journey home.

Race Results

Uli Hart secured the most significant win of his burgeoning surfski career in 3 hours, 55 minutes, and 26 seconds. Simon van Gysen finished second (3:56:48), with Daniel Jacobs earning third (4:00:07). Reflecting on his demanding but successful season, which included winning the Under 23 World Championship, Hart expressed his joy: "To return home and conclude it with such a high-profile victory was somewhat unexpected, and truly fantastic."

Women's Race

Kira Bester claimed the women's Cape Point Challenge title (4:32:38), four minutes ahead of Under 18 world champion Saskia Hockly (4:36:42). Bester described her race: "I started well... I then had to push hard... from Millers, we finally had good wind and excellent runs."
