Wong shows class to storm to Asian Canoe Ocean Racing crown in China

Hong Kong’s Hock Wing Winnie Wong proved a class above as she swept to the women’s surfski title at the Asian Canoe Ocean Racing Championships in Qingdao, China. The 38-year-old paddler was in a league of her own as she cruised to an emphatic victory at Shilaoren Beach. Wong was the only athlete in the women’s field to go below the two-hour barrier as she triumphed in a time of 1:58:52.15. It was a Hong Kong one-two as Wing Yan Tang secured silver in 2:22:13.49 after getting better of Singapore’s Jin Yi Frances Leong who picked up bronze in 2:25:55.94. Leong dashed Hong Kong’s hopes of a clean sweep of the medals as she pushed Ka Lee Chan into fourth place. The men’s SS1 title was won by Lyu Weiwu after he emerged victorious in a time of 1:49:24.65. Japan’s Naoto Uchida put up a strong fight but came up short, taking silver in 1:49:43.35. The bronze medal went to Singapore’s Yan Jin Lionel Lee after he crossed the finish line in 1:51:00.17. Ying Tang chased another medal for Hong Kong but missed out on a podium after clocking 1:53:00.39. More than 350 athletes from 10 nations turned out for the Asian Championships that saw paddlers start at Shilaoren Beach, turn around at Qiungdao Olympic Venue and finish back at Shilaoren Beach.
